Rudy Giuliani on immigration

Short answer: he'll vastly increase legal immigration and continue allowing illegal immigration, just like a repeat of George Bush.

That's a distillation of his remarks on tonight's Hannity & Colmes (transcript here).

He supports a massive amnesty for illegal aliens, calling it by the euphemism "regularization".

What he calls "regularization" would be seen by millions and millions of people around the world as an amnesty, no matter what he wants to call it for domestic consumption.

A good portion of those people would come to the U.S. by any way possible in order to take part in the next "regularization".

Giuliani's amnesty would make future amnesties much more likely due to establishing yet another precedent and also because it would give even more political power to those forces that support amnesty (corrupt corporations, racial power groups, the far-left, etc.)

He opposes the real fence, prefering the "virtual" kind. He even praises Mel Martinez ("a great guy") and quotes one of his pro-illegal immigration quips: "He said except the only people that will pull put it up will be the illegal immigrants."

Regarding him suing to establish NYC as a sanctuary for illegal aliens, he lied: he had other options. One of those options would be to put pressure on the INS to deport more people. Combined with making NYC unattractive to illegal aliens through such things as working with the INS, denying them driver's licenses and public services and the like he could have greatly decreased the numbers of illegal aliens in his city.

His idea of a tough amnesty involves making sure former illegal aliens know English. I'm sure a simple test is going to deter millions of prospective illegal aliens from trying to come here.

In brief, he would be a repeat of George Bush. If he's too corrupt or too dumb to figure out the damage that his immigration plans would do to the country, then - as with Bush - all his other plans would likewise end in failure.

If you're one of the small number of people who haven't yet figured out how unqualified Bush is and how much damage he's done, then Rudy is for you. Everyone else should select someone who will put America's best interests ahead of whatever motivates Giuliani.
